Buying Time for Educators

Services

Consulting

Schools and districts are always trying to re-create the wheel. We can help you sift through important decision-making processes like creating and structuring an effective intervention program, choosing sound curricular materials, or advancing a mathematics department culture of collaboration and growth. Ask about our customizable consulting services.

Coaching

We can’t observe ourselves as we perform our daily routines. Even video of ourselves leaves out details. Also, professional learning and growth is frequently magnified when it’s a shared experience. From the new to the experienced educator, everyone can benefit from coaching.

Professional Development

Educators must set the example of being lifelong learners. Being involved in professional learning does not equate to being deficient as an educator. We can always improve our craft.

Meet Mark

After receiving a BS in Mathematics/Applied Economics and a Secondary Mathematics teaching credential from UCLA in 1989, Mark embarked on his lifelong journey as a mathematics educator.

He began a fruitful and rewarding middle school teaching career in Santa Monica, CA, that lasted for 12 years, ending as a mentor teacher and BTSA Support Provider.

His next phase was at UCLA, partly in the Graduate School of Education and Information Sciences, and primarily in the Mathematics Department. Of his many experiences over those 10 years, Mark taught countless in-service teachers in the UCLA Math Content Program for Teachers, where he also wrote some of the courses. Mark also taught the middle school courses for pre-service teachers in the Cal Teach program. Mark conducted professional learning sessions all over the Greater Los Angeles area, and helped implement an enormous joint endeavor with LAUSD, providing professional development to every K – 2 teachers in the district. It was at UCLA where he co-authored his first of several middle school mathematics courses, Introduction to Algebra, (2010).

During this time at UCLA, Mark received his MA in the Teaching of Mathematics from the Math Department at CA State University, Dominguez Hills. At that point, the faculty at CSUDH invited Mark to teach their elementary mathematics credentialing courses, which he did for four years in addition to his responsibilities at UCLA.

In 2010, with a few of his UCLA colleagues, Mark co-founded the Center for Mathematics and Teaching, a 501 (c)3 non-profit, where he continues to work on the management team. At CMAT, he is the lead author on two sets of middle school curricula, MathLinks: Core Grades 6 – 8 (1st Edition 2015, 2nd Edition 2023), and a set middle school intervention modules, MathLinks: Essentials. Mark oversees contributing writers, conducts professional development (with lesson study and coaching instructional coaches being personal favorites), and is involved in all of the business decisions within the company.
